The third graders had a small recorder recital recently. The fifth and seventh graders showed off their guitar knowledge in recitals recently as well. All performed very well!
Early in April, students in first through fifth grade do forensics presentations. This teaches them the art of presenting a subject, demonstating something or interpreting a story in front of an audience. The students work hard on this and it's always a fun competition!
Mr. Nottestad recently finished a square dancing unit with some of the classes. Mr. N likes the square dancing unit because it teaches teamwork, helps practice good listening, and, as you will see, is just plain fun!
To celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday grades 1-4 had a special morning to honor him. They made Thing 1 and 2, they wrote stories, listened to stories read by Tim Tebow and Justin Bieber, and made Oobleck. In math class, they did a graphing assignment with colored goldfish. Grades 4K though 4th grade attended Camp-Read-A-Lot during their library class recently. The students bought blankets, pillows and stuffed animals and made themselves comfortable around the “campfire”. A tent and twinkling stars (Christmas lights) helped the students imagine they were on a campout. They listened to campfire stories and participated in chants.
To prepare for the holidays there were clay projects galore in the art room, especially in the lower grades. First graders made thumb pots with lids and celebrated their completion with a tea party. Second graders made hot chocolate mugs; third graders made ornaments, and fourth graders made Christmas trees. Seventh graders worked very hard on a carving project using blocks of sandstone. They watched their ideas come and go as the nature of the material came into play. The results were very pleasing. They then researched and gave presentations on this sculpture technique.
Students in Grades 1-4 learned about the virtue for the month of December--Kindness. After watching a video on kindness and discussing ways to show this virtue, students made kindness flowers for a buddy in a different grade. On the flower's petals, students wrote things that they liked about their buddy. Then, at the end of the day, students exchanged their flowers.
The third and fourth graders have been working on reading fluency, which means being able to read smoothly and with expression. To practice, students were each given a Christmas picture book. They practiced reading their books for three days. Then, on the fourth day, they read their books to the first and second graders. Everyone did a great job!
The 3rd grade class took an adjective walk down the catwalk. Students/Models showed their skills while strutting down the catwalk while other students "judged them" by writing as many adjectives as they could to describe the models.
